Supreme Court ruling on permission to work restricted by Home Office
The Supreme Court has ruled that an asylum seeker who has submitted fresh evidence should be given permission to work after waiting 12 months for a decision. Immigration minister Damien Green responded by proposing to bar asylum seekers from the majority of available UK jobs. Refugee Council’s Jonathan Ellis said “the government should not limit this right to a small number of asylum seekers”. Refugee Council calls for renewed action on Let Them Work campaign
The recent Home Office response to the Supreme Court decision on permission to work highlights the need for all asylum seekers to have the right to work. Lambeth Council announce 30% cuts to cut voluntary sector funding for young people's services
Lambeth has announced that over the next five years it will cut voluntary sector funding for young people’s services by £90m. The council said “we are committed to keeping any reductions to an absolute minimum.” However they also plan to make some voluntary organisations reapply for existing contracts so the terms can be renegotiated. The Basis Project calls for RCOs to respond to Big Lottery fund consultation
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has proposed to reduce the amount of funding directed from lottery proceeds to the Big Lottery Fund (BIG). BIG funds many voluntary sector organisations, including RCOs. The Basis Project plans to respond to the consultation and is calling for RCOs to feed in views, or respond directly themselves. Sheffield’s Northern Refugee Centre faces huge cuts
Northern Refugee Centre Chief Executive, Jim Steinke, said "We are significantly funded by the UK Borders Agency…and cuts to the Department of Communities and Local Government have also affected us.” Consequently the centre will lose up to half its staff and be forced to reduce services significantly. New guide to UN convention on the rights of persons with disabilities
A new guide to the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons (UNCRDP) has been published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The guide will help disabled people to know what their rights are and how to use them, and will help people to improve services for themselves and others. Media Trust and The Sun are giving 16-21 yr olds who have strong opinions the chance to write a column for The Sun. City of Sanctuary National Conference

This year’s national conference will feature inspiring stories from City of Sanctuary initiatives across the UK, including Swansea, which has recently become Wales’ first official City of Sanctuary.
