I'm volunteering for Refugee Week for the first time, and am really passionate about the cause because of the fantastic diversity of cultures Refugees bring to their places of refuge. Many examples of this can be found in international and foreign film, which is why my Simple Act is 'Watch a Movie about Refugees'.
I absolutely love film, and since stumbling upon the fantastic 'I am David' I have been watching as many foreign films as I can get my hands on. It was quite easy to find DVDs in shops and for rent - many Entertainment and Rental stores have a World Cinema section. I encourage everyone I know to give international films a chance - more often than not they will surprise and delight with their visual richness and vivid storylines.
'Watch a Movie about Refugees' is a Simple Act that you can do without even leaving the comfort of your sofa, and to make things even easier, I've put together my top 5 Refugee films of all time:
5. New Year Baby - Documentary of a Woman born in Thailand who travels to America in search of her past. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qgiJnXXkFM
4. Dirty Pretty Things - A Nigerian doctor and Turkish chambermaid working at the same hotel uncover all the bad goings-on inside the hotel rooms. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfgDIgjZVxs
3. I am David - The story of a 12-year-old boy that escapes a East European prison camp and begins his journey to freedom. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YscfLU7TH7c
2. The Terminal - Follows a man (Tom Hanks) that is unauthorized to leave Kennedy Airport after his home country erupts into violence. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm1xrJD5aW8
1. Hotel Rwanda - Movie about a Hotel Manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees fleeing the Hutu Militia. Based on true events. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Vx5IeHxbn8
Each film tells the story of people fighting against oppression, and helps give an insight into the types of conditions refugees live in. This refugee week - watch one of my Top Five, it may end up being the most eye-opening Simple Act you do.
